In plain English

The straight story

Rockford is truck country, and a working diesel can’t sit in a specialty shop’s queue for two weeks. We service the light-duty diesels that tow, plow, and haul around Winnebago County — GM Duramax, Ford Power Stroke, and Ram Cummins pickups — with the scan platforms that speak their control modules fluently.

Modern diesel problems are mostly emissions-system problems: DPF regeneration cycles interrupted by short trips, DEF quality faults, EGR carbon buildup, and the limp-mode countdowns that come with them. We diagnose those from live data instead of parts-cannoning $800 sensors, and we’ll tell you plainly which repairs are must-do emissions compliance and which are maintenance you can schedule.

The rest is working-truck fundamentals done to spec: fuel filters and water separators on schedule, glow-plug service before winter (a diesel that started fine in September can refuse in January), coolant health for towing temps, and brakes, bearings, and suspension sized to what the truck actually pulls.

Signs you need this

  • Check-engine or DEF/DPF warning with a countdown message
  • Hard starts, long cranks, or white smoke when cold
  • Regeneration cycles that never seem to finish
  • Noticeable fuel-economy drop or black smoke under load
  • Limp mode or reduced power while towing
  • Water-in-fuel light on

Common questions

Do you work on diesel pickups, or just cars?

Light-duty diesel pickups are core work here — Duramax, Power Stroke, and Cummins. We handle everything from fuel-filter services and glow plugs to DPF/DEF emissions diagnostics and towing-grade brake work. Heavy commercial trucks over one-ton class we’ll refer honestly.

Why does my diesel keep trying to regen?

Short trips are the usual culprit — the DPF needs sustained heat to burn off soot, and around-town driving interrupts the cycle repeatedly. Sometimes it’s a stuck sensor or an EGR problem masquerading as a soot issue. Live data tells us which; that’s the diagnosis, not a guess.

My DEF warning shows a countdown — how urgent is it?

Urgent. Once the countdown reaches zero, federal emissions logic limits the truck to low speed until the fault is fixed — that’s not a shop policy, it’s the law baked into the software. Bring it in with mileage to spare, and we’ll diagnose whether it’s fluid quality, a sensor, or the injector.

Should glow plugs be replaced before winter?

Test them in fall, replace what fails — a marginal glow plug that starts a truck at 40°F will strand it at 10°F. We test all of them during any fall service; it’s cheap insurance against a no-start on the coldest morning of the year.
