Why is my oil light on?
The short answer
A red oil-pressure light means the engine may be losing lubrication right now — pull over safely and shut it off. Check the dipstick: if oil is low, topping off may get you to a shop; if the level is fine, do not keep driving on a lit oil light. Minutes of oil starvation can destroy an engine.

Oil level critically low
Leaks or gradual consumption finally dropped the level below what the pump can pick up. The most common and most fixable cause — if you stop before damage is done.
Failing oil-pressure sensor
Sensors do fail, and a false alarm is common enough to hope for — but never to assume. The dipstick and a pressure test tell the truth; guessing wrong costs an engine.
Oil pump or pickup problems
A worn pump or sludged pickup screen can’t maintain pressure even with a full sump — often appearing first as flicker at hot idle. Serious, and worth catching at the flicker stage.

Never “drive it and see.” Rod bearings die in minutes without pressure, and there’s no affordable version of that repair.

No — and confusing them is dangerous. The maintenance reminder (usually amber text like “Oil Change Due”) is a calendar. The red oil-can icon is a pressure alarm meaning lubrication may be failing right now. The first is an errand; the second is an emergency.
The oil light flickers at stoplights but goes off when I drive. Is that okay?
That’s low pressure at hot idle — classically a worn pump, worn bearings, or oil thinned past its service life. It’s the early, affordable warning of a problem that will not stay small. Book a pressure test this week.
