Why is my check engine light flashing?
The short answer
A flashing check engine light means an active misfire is sending raw, unburned fuel into your catalytic converter — where it ignites and can destroy the converter within minutes. Slow down, avoid highway speeds and hard acceleration, and get to a shop immediately. This is the difference between a $300 repair and a $2,000 one.

Ignition misfire — failed coil or spark plug
The most common cause: one cylinder’s spark quits, raw fuel passes through unburned, and the converter becomes an incinerator. Usually accompanied by shaking and lost power.
Fuel injector failure
A stuck or dead injector unbalances the cylinder the same way — misfire, flashing light, converter abuse. Distinguishable from ignition faults with live data.
Mechanical problem in one cylinder
Low compression from a burned valve or failing head gasket misfires no matter how good spark and fuel are. Less common, found quickly with a compression test.

The active misfire subsided, but the fault that caused it is still logged and still there — intermittent misfires return, usually under load, usually at the worst time. Get it diagnosed while the freeze-frame evidence is fresh.
