What does code P0455 mean — is it my gas cap?

The short answer

P0455 means the evaporative emissions (EVAP) system found a large leak, so the sealed fuel-vapor system can't hold pressure. Start with the gas cap: a loose, cracked, or missing cap is the most common cause. If the cap is tight and the code returns, a smoke test finds the actual leak. The car is safe to drive in the meantime.

Likely causes, ranked

Cause 01

Loose, damaged, or wrong gas cap

most common

The cheapest fix in the code library. A cap that wasn't clicked tight after filling up, a cracked seal, or a cheap aftermarket cap that doesn't seal properly will all set P0455. Tighten it until it clicks, then give it several days of driving.

Cause 02

Purge or vent valve stuck open

common

These valves control when vapor moves from the charcoal canister to the engine. A valve stuck open leaves the system unable to seal, which reads as a large leak. A purge valve stuck open can also make the car hard to start right after refueling.

Cause 03

Cracked EVAP hose or filler neck

common

EVAP lines run along the underbody, where Illinois road salt and age make plastic brittle and rust out filler necks. A smoke test shows the exact spot instead of leaving a shop to guess.

Cause 04

Damaged charcoal canister

less common

The canister can crack, or get saturated from repeatedly topping off the tank after the pump clicks off. Less common, but expensive enough that it should be confirmed before it is replaced.

What to do right now

  1. 1

Remove the gas cap, check the seal for cracks, and reinstall it until it clicks. The light may take several days of normal driving to go out on its own.

  2. 2

Stop topping off after the pump clicks off — extra fuel floods the vapor canister and causes EVAP faults of its own.

  3. 3

If the light returns or never goes out, call (779) 208-4961. A smoke test finds the leak, so you don't pay for parts that weren't the problem.

03

What it typically costs

If it's the gas cap, a quality replacement costs little. Diagnostics with a smoke test $89–$149, applied to the repair. Purge and vent valve repairs commonly $150–$350; EVAP hoses and filler necks $200–$500; charcoal canisters $300–$700, depending on the vehicle.

Our diagnosis fee goes toward the repair.

Related questions

I tightened the gas cap. How long until the light goes off?

The system has to run its own leak test again, which happens only under certain conditions — usually after a cold start with the tank between about a quarter and three-quarters full. That can take several days of normal driving. If the light is still on after a week or so, the leak is somewhere else.

Is a P0455 leak dangerous?

Not immediately. It's an emissions fault, not a drivability one. But a strong fuel smell is a different story: raw fuel odor around the car means a liquid leak, not just vapor, and that should be looked at the same day.

What is the difference between P0455 and P0442?

Both are EVAP leaks; the number says how big. P0455 is a large leak — often a cap or a valve stuck open. P0442 is a small one, as small as a pinhole in a hose. Small leaks are harder to find, so a smoke test matters even more.
