What does code P0171 mean — system too lean?
The short answer
P0171 means bank 1 of the engine is running lean — more air (or less fuel) than the computer can correct. The classic causes: a vacuum leak, a dirty mass-airflow sensor, or weak fuel delivery. It's drivable short-term, but sustained lean running raises combustion temperatures and eventually damages what's expensive.

Vacuum leak after the MAF sensor
Unmetered air sneaking in through a cracked intake boot, brittle vacuum line, or failed gasket is the textbook P0171. The engine gets air the computer never measured, and fuel trims climb trying to compensate. Smoke testing finds these in minutes.
Dirty or failing MAF sensor
A contaminated mass-airflow sensor under-reports how much air is entering, so the computer under-fuels. Sometimes a careful cleaning resolves it; live-data comparison against known-good values tells us whether cleaning or replacement is honest.
Weak fuel delivery
A tired fuel pump, clogged filter, or restricted injectors can't supply what the engine needs — same lean result from the fuel side. Shows up strongest under load; fuel-pressure and injector-balance testing separate it from the air-side causes.
PCV or purge-valve faults
A stuck PCV valve or EVAP purge valve is a vacuum leak wearing a disguise. Cheap parts, quick confirmations, and commonly overlooked by parts-first guessing.

Is it OK to drive with P0171?
Short-term, usually — expect rough idle and softer fuel economy. Long-term, lean means hot: sustained lean running elevates combustion temperatures, which is hard on valves, pistons, and the catalytic converter. Weeks are reasonable; a season is not.
I replaced the O2 sensor and the code came back. Why?
Because the sensor was the messenger, not the problem. P0171 says the mixture IS lean — the sensor measuring it is usually doing its job correctly. This is the most parts-cannoned code we see, and the fix is diagnosing the air or fuel side properly.
What are fuel trims, in plain English?
The computer's running correction for the fuel mixture. Positive trims mean it's adding extra fuel to fight a lean condition — and how large the number is, at idle versus cruise, points at which cause is likeliest. It's the primary evidence in any honest P0171 diagnosis.
