What does code P0300 mean — random or multiple misfires?
The short answer
P0300 means the engine is misfiring across multiple cylinders with no single culprit — usually ignition (plugs, coils), fuel delivery, or a vacuum leak affecting the whole engine. If the check-engine light is FLASHING, stop driving: raw fuel is reaching the catalytic converter and destroying it in real time. A steady light is a this-week diagnosis.

Worn spark plugs or ignition coils
The most common cause by far, especially past the plug replacement interval. Worn plugs demand more voltage than aging coils can deliver, and the weakest cylinders start dropping — randomly at first, then constantly.
Vacuum leak
A cracked intake hose, failed gasket, or stuck PCV valve leans out the whole engine — and a uniformly lean engine misfires randomly. The hiss is sometimes audible; smoke testing finds the rest.
Fuel delivery — pump, filter, or injectors
Low fuel pressure starves all cylinders equally, producing exactly the "random, multiple" pattern P0300 describes. Worse under load and up hills — fuel-pressure testing under those conditions confirms it.
Compression or timing issues
A stretched timing chain or low compression misfires mechanically. Rarer, and the diagnosis we reach with measurements after the common causes test clean — never the opening guess.

Why is a flashing check-engine light such an emergency?
Flashing is the computer's signal that misfires are severe enough to dump raw fuel into the exhaust, where it burns inside the catalytic converter. Minutes of driving can do converter damage that costs ten times the original repair. Pull over; get it towed.
Should I just replace all the plugs and coils?
Plugs, if they're due by age — that's maintenance. All coils "just in case" is parts-cannon spending: coils are individually testable, and P0300's cause is often not ignition at all. A $89–$149 diagnosis routinely saves hundreds in unneeded parts.
