Why does my car shake at highway speed?
The short answer
A shake that appears between 55–75 mph is most often wheel balance — a lost weight or worn tire — and sometimes a bent wheel, separated tire belt, or worn suspension. Balance problems are cheap to fix; a separating tire is dangerous. The speed-specific pattern is the diagnostic clue.

Wheels out of balance
A 55–70 mph vibration that fades above or below a specific speed band is textbook imbalance — clip-on weights fall off, tires wear unevenly. A spin balance finds it in minutes.
Bent wheel from pothole season
Rockford’s freeze-thaw craters bend rims — sometimes visibly, often only measurably. The shake typically persists across speeds and worsens with load on that corner.
Tire defect — separated belt or flat spot
A broken internal belt makes a wobble that balance can’t cure and gets worse by the week. This is the dangerous one, and the reason highway shakes deserve prompt eyes.
Worn driveline or suspension components
CV joints, wheel bearings, and tired bushings each add their signature. If the shake changes with acceleration vs. coasting, the driveline moves up the suspect list.
