Why is my car making a humming noise that gets louder with speed?
The short answer
A hum or growl that rises with vehicle speed — not engine RPM — is most often a failing wheel bearing or uneven tire wear. The classic bearing test: the noise changes when you swerve gently. Bearings only get worse, and a fully failed one can seize, so have it diagnosed soon.

Failing wheel bearing
Starts as a faint hum, grows into a growl, eventually a roar. Changes pitch when you gently swerve as load shifts between wheels. The corner can be confirmed on a lift in minutes.
Cupped or chopped tire wear
Uneven tread blocks slap the pavement and mimic a bearing almost perfectly. Usually caused by worn shocks or missed rotations — the noise is the symptom, the wear pattern is the evidence.
Aggressive or winter tire tread
Some tires simply hum by design, and winter tires hum more as they wear. If the noise appeared right after new tires, that’s your suspect.
Differential or driveline wear
On AWD/RWD vehicles, a whine or hum under load that changes between acceleration and coasting can be differential-related. Less common, and distinguishable on a proper road test.

How long can I drive on a humming wheel bearing?
An early hum gives you time to schedule; a loud growl doesn’t. Heat and play compound the wear, and the end state — a seized or wobbling wheel at speed — isn’t worth the gamble. Weeks at the hum stage, days at the growl stage.
Why is the hum louder when I turn one direction?
Turning shifts vehicle weight onto one side. Louder turning left usually means the right bearing (now loaded) is the bad one, and vice versa. It’s a useful clue — tell your technician which way makes it sing.
