Why is my battery light on while driving?
The short answer
A battery light while driving means the charging system has stopped charging — you’re running on stored battery power, typically 30–60 minutes before everything shuts down. Usually it’s the alternator or its belt. Turn off non-essentials, skip errands, and drive directly to a shop or home.

Failing alternator
Worn brushes, a failed diode, or a dead voltage regulator — output drops and the battery starts draining to run the car. The classic cause, confirmed in minutes with an output test.
Broken or slipping serpentine belt
If the belt that spins the alternator snaps, the battery light often arrives with sudden heavy steering and a temperature climb — the same belt usually drives the power-steering and water pumps. Pull over if steering stiffens.
Corroded connections or bad ground
Salt-country classic: corrosion at the battery terminals or chassis ground chokes the charging circuit. Cheap to fix, and one reason we test the whole system before condemning the alternator.
