Why does my transmission feel like it’s slipping?
The short answer
Slipping — engine revving without matching acceleration, or gear changes that flare and thud — often traces to low or degraded transmission fluid, a failing solenoid, or a sensor fault before it means internal damage. Diagnose it early: continued slipping generates heat, and heat is what actually kills transmissions.

Likely causes, ranked
Low or burnt transmission fluid
Fluid is the transmission’s hydraulic muscle and its coolant. Low fluid slips; burnt fluid (dark, acrid) grips poorly and cooks itself worse with every slip. The first, cheapest thing to check — and the most common finding.
Failing shift solenoid or speed sensor
Electronic transmissions live and die by sensor data and solenoid response. A $250–$900 electrical repair frequently masquerades as a “rebuild” at less scrupulous shops.
Worn clutch packs or torque converter
Genuine internal wear — usually after high mileage, towing, or long-neglected fluid. Real, but properly diagnosed as the conclusion, never the opening bid.
What to do right now
- 1
Stop hard acceleration and towing until diagnosed — every slip event is a heat event.
- 2
Note the specifics: which gears, cold vs. warm, flare on upshifts vs. delay engaging Drive. It all localizes the fault.
- 3
Get a scan-plus-road-test diagnosis before anyone quotes a rebuild. Fluid condition and live data tell most of the story.
What it typically costs
Fluid service $189–$349 at Grote Auto Repair; solenoid/sensor repairs commonly $250–$900. Genuine rebuild/replacement territory is $3,200–$6,500 — which is exactly why the $89–$149 diagnosis (applied to the repair) comes first, not last.

Related questions
Does slipping always mean the transmission is dying?
No — fluid problems and electronic faults cause a large share of slipping complaints, and both are far cheaper than internal repair. But slipping does accelerate wear while it continues, so “diagnose promptly” is the honest middle ground between panic and denial.
My car only slips when cold. What does that mean?
Cold, thick fluid struggling through tight passages — often an early sign that fluid is overdue, occasionally a valve-body quirk of your model. Either way it’s the affordable stage of the problem. Service it now, before warm-slipping joins the party.
