Why is my car suddenly so loud?
The short answer
A car that got loud overnight almost always has an exhaust leak — a rusted-through pipe, muffler seam, or flex pipe, extremely common after Illinois winters. It’s usually an affordable, same-day fix. If you can smell exhaust inside the car, treat it as urgent: that’s a carbon monoxide risk.

Rusted-through exhaust component
Road salt eats exhaust systems from the outside and condensation from the inside. A weakened muffler seam or pipe section finally lets go and the car wakes up sounding like a stock car. The most common cause by far in northern Illinois.
Failed flex pipe
The braided joint that absorbs engine movement cracks with age — loudest under acceleration, often with a rattle. A contained, common repair.
Exhaust manifold or gasket leak
Loud ticking or roaring from the engine bay rather than underneath. Closer to the cabin air intake, so take the “do I smell exhaust?” question seriously with these.
Detached hanger letting a joint separate
A rusted hanger drops the pipe, stressing a joint until it opens. Often announced by a clunk over bumps before the loudness arrives.
